John Herring - Silver Beaver Award
In 2010, Assistant Scoutmaster John Herring received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest form of recognition that a local BSA council can bestow on an adult volunteer. This award was established in 1931 to recognize distinguished service to youth in the area of a local council. Adult volunteers receiving this award tonight must be a registered adult member of the BSA, nominated by his Scouting peers, selected by the Pushmataha Area Council, and approved by the National Court of Honor. The Silver Beaver Award is given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service.
John Herring started his Scouting career as a youth in South Mississippi in the Pine Burr Area Council, and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout almost 40 years ago. His mom and dad must have believed in the Scouting program – his 3 brothers are also Eagle Scouts. While a Boy Scout, he attended summer camp at Camp Tiak and also participated in a Trek at Philmont Scout ranch.
He began his adult Scouter career in 1998 as a Cub Scout den leader and then became a Webelos leader as his son advanced through the ranks. He crossed over with his son and all of his Webelos into Boy Scouting and became an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 14 in Starkville. Shortly after joining the Troop, he completed Basic Leader Training and Outdoor Leader Training. Several years later he completed the Wood Badge adult leader training program. Along with his son, he was tapped out and inducted into the Order of the Arrow. Several years later he received his Brotherhood membership in the Order of the Arrow. He was the first recipient of the Bert Reed Leadership Award which is given by Troop 14 in memory of a long time Scoutmaster and is used to honor Asst. Scoutmasters and committee members that provide outstanding leadership to the Troop. In 2006, he participated in the Autumn Adventure program at Philmont which allows adult leaders to experience this high adventure camp in the fall.
Although this Scouter’s son earned the rank of Eagle Scout several years ago and graduated from scouting when he turned 18, he has continued to serve Troop 14 as an assistant Scoutmaster. He has also been involved at the council level by serving on the staff for Basic Leader Training, Outdoor Leader Training, as a merit badge counselor at summer camp, on 2 Wood Badge staffs as Troop Guide and Senior Patrol Leader, and as a COPE instructor. He received the District Award of Merit in recognition for his service to the Choctaw District and Pushmataha Area Council . He is currently serving as an adult leader preparing for the council Philmont Trek this summer.
Lastly, this Scouter is an excellent cook, storyteller, backwoods poet, outdoorsman, and just an all around nice guy. He has made Scouting a fun and enjoyable adventure for countless Scouts and adult leaders.
